May Day! MayDay!

''May Day! May Day! With over 3000 historic buildings at risk in Wales, we have a chance to at least save one!

The May Day holiday is coming up. Why not have drinks in the Hollybush in Draethen and then take a walk on the footpaths around Ruperra? It is privately owned so don’t trespass into the grounds.See the map of footpaths on this page.

Since the last report 5 years ago Cadw has now assessed the condition of Ruperra Castle as ‘critical’

“The castle is derelict and is unsafe to enter."

“Condition: worsened - severe. Action to prevent major collapse or damage is
required urgently. Vulnerability: high. There is an immediate threat from uncontrolled structural decay.”

The Castle has therefore, almost, reached the 'tipping point' at which intervention is essential, as highlighted by Mr.Alan Poulter the Planning Inspector, who upheld the County Councillors’ refusal for housing development at the Planning Appeal in April 2009.
